Why we celebrate International Dog Day?
Dogs are humans’ best friends! They’ve been helping us for as long as a few thousand years. At first, they supported us at hunting, and now they contribute to the success in a variety of public fields. Dogs work in law enforcement agencies, where they help to find bombs, drugs, or criminals. They help blind people to move in the surroundings, as well as nose out whether a person has cancer or not. The list is endless. The International Dog Day is celebrated to honor our valuable little friends.
The International Dog Day or The National Dog Day was first celebrated on August 26, 2004, initiated by Collin Page. The girl is an animal rights activist, and she chose this date for a reason. It was on August 26 that her family adopted a new friend, a dog called Sheltie. This day is not only a holiday, but an important day for solving the problem of homeless animals as well. Thanks to it, over a million homeless tails have found home since 2004.
What Do People Do?
On the International Dog Day, people do what they can to help shelters. They try to reduce the number of homeless animals, buy food for them, or hold charity events. Many countries celebrate this day on July 2. In Japan, it is held on January 11 to honor the famous Akita-Inu dog, who spent 9 years waiting for his deceased owner. In Great Britain it is celebrated on the last Sunday of April. In China, the holiday is called the Birthday of the Dog and is held on the 2nd day of the Chinese New Year celebration. On this day, all stray dogs are generously fed. In Nepal, on the 2nd day of the Tihar festival, dogs are dressed in bright clothes. Thus, the Nepalis demonstrate their attention to them and call it Kuku Tihar.
How to Celebrate International Dog Day?
In the USA, the International Dog Day is celebrated annually on August 26. The holiday is very popular in many countries. Give your pet a treat and go for a walk together. Try to help stray dogs who have no one to take care of them. Also, in August, the International Cat Day and the International Homeless Animals Day are celebrated. You can also watching films about dogs, such as Marley & Me, A Dog’s Purpose, Hachi: A Dog’s Tale and The Call of the Wild.
