Why we celebrate World Blood Donor Day
In real life, nobody is immune from accidents. At any time, a person may need medical care and certain resources. Blood and its components are among such important resources. If a person suffers from severe blood loss, he or she may die. To save such a person, a donor’s blood is transfused to him. But it’s not that simple. There are 4 human blood types – the first is the most common and the fourth is the rarest. There are certain subtleties; for example, people with the first blood type 0(I) are considered versatile donors. Their blood can be transfused to people with other types. The ABO blood type system was discovered by German doctor Karl Landsteiner.
The World Blood Donor Day is annually celebrated on June 14 – on Karl Landsteiner’s birthday. This is a day to express gratitude and appreciation to donors who give their blood to save other people’s lives. For the public healthcare, this day is one of the most important ones.
What Do People Do
The World Blood Donor Day was first celebrated in 2005. It was initiated by WHO and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The event’s goal was to inform the public about importance of donating blood and its value. Every year, the holiday slogan is chosen. In 2021, the slogan was “Give blood and keep the world beating.” Even now, in some countries it is impossible to transfuse and store this crucial liquid safely. On this day, every volunteer can join the life savers. Healthcare institutions organize campaigns and open receiving points for donors all around the world. Honorary donors who donated blood for free receive certificates of gratitude, badges, or other recognition awards and gifts.
How to Celebrate World Blood Donor Day
You can celebrate the World Blood Donor Day from anywhere over the globe by becoming a voluntary blood donor. Contact your local hospital or a blood transfusion point. To become a donor, you should refuse alcohol and junk food a couple of days prior to transfusion. A couple of hours before transfusion, you should also refrain from smoking tobacco, physical activity, and have a little rest.
The World Blood Donor Day is an important day, so many state institutions allow the blood donors they employ a full or partial day off.
