Why we celebrate Religious Freedom Day?
Religious Freedom Day is a national holiday celebrated in the United States. On this day, all people, regardless of their faith, seek to understand each other and find common ground. Some people dispel myths about their own faith and fight society’s prejudices, while others try to learn a little more about someone else’s culture.
In 1786, Thomas Jefferson’s Religious Liberty Bill was passed by the Virginia General Assembly. This particular piece of legislation led to the creation of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. After this amendment was adopted, absolutely all Americans became free to practice whatever religion they wanted, and no one condemned them for it. The holiday has been celebrated officially since the early 1990s.
What Do People Do?
On this day, the President of the United States urges all people to remember the country’s history, as well as the many struggles for civil rights and the freedom to worship any religion. Schools, colleges, and universities hold a variety of events to commemorate Religious Freedom Day. High school and college students learn about the constitution and portray historical figures who influenced the event. Concerts and performances are held in the streets of cities. Many people celebrate the holiday with family and friends.
How to Celebrate Religious Freedom Day?
Religious Freedom Day is celebrated annually in the United States on January 16. You can also celebrate the holiday by attending appropriate events or concerts, or by congratulating friends who practice another religion. It is also not unreasonable if you spread the appropriate hashtag – #NationalReligiousFreedomDay – on social media.
