Why we celebrate National Babysitters Day?
Every year on the Saturday before Mother’s Day in the United States (the second Sunday in May), National Babysitters Day is celebrated. This holiday is dedicated to the women, girls, and even boys who help mothers take care of their children.
The holiday was established at the initiative of the organization Safety Whys, which conducts special training courses for future babysitters. The project has been in existence since 1989 and was created in Helotes, Texas. Over its many years of activity, it has earned credibility in the eyes of the people of the United States. Therefore, the proposal to celebrate National Babysitters Day in June 2002 was actively supported, and since 2003 the event has become a regular occurrence.
What Do People Do?
Parents congratulate their babysitters or nannies and thank them. Children draw greeting cards for their babysitters or nannies. Babysitters do not replace the mother, but help her when needed. A professional nanny knows how to properly feed and care for a child and play with him. He is also able to provide first aid to the child. Choosing a nanny is a responsible process. Finding a candidate suitable in terms of parenting style, age and experience is difficult, but possible.
How to Celebrate National Babysitters Day?
National Babysitters Day is not a day off, especially for those who celebrate it. On this holiday, you should thank your babysitters for taking care of your child, give her a gift or pay her a bonus.
Interesting facts about the profession
- Originally, the work of a nanny was not considered a separate specialty. Basically, there were nannies who looked after other people’s children as a part-time job after their main job.
- Babysitters and governesses are not the same thing. Babysitters work with children and their purpose is care and play. Governesses are hired to teach school-age children.
- Professional nannies only care for and develop children. Performing household chores is not part of their services. Parents have to either hire a separate person to do this, or pay extra money to their current nanny if she agrees to do extra work.
- An hourly rate for a babysitters can range from $5 to $25.
- In many rich families, nannies become full members of the family: they live in the same house with the children, go on vacations with them, etc.
