Why we celebrate Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus?
The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is an important celebration in the Roman Catholic Church. The holiday is celebrated on the first Friday after the feast of Corpus Christi and on the twelfth day after Trinity Sunday. It symbolizes the boundless love of Jesus for people and the true nature of God.
This day first appeared in the 17th century. Jesus appeared in the visions of a French nun – St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. He expressed his desire to symbolize and honor his love through the heart. The nun arranged the cult of “The Sacred Heart of Jesus” to fulfill his request. The church did not recognize the holiday for a long time. But one day, Pope Pius IX became seriously interested in the cult. The Pope supported them and established a compulsory celebration throughout the world in 1856. A few years later, Pope Leo XIII took it to the highest status of church holidays.
What Do People Do?
Previously, royalists wore the image of the Sacred Heart on their chest during the war. It served as an amulet for them. The Sacred Heart was depicted on banners and weapons to receive the help of Christ. In modern times, the celebration of the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus begins with communion. Then, a prayer is read, in which they ask the Heart of Jesus to teach to find the brothers of Christ. Some believers follow the tradition of nine first Fridays, which are based on the promises of Jesus. The promises are taken from the letters of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque.
Since this holiday occupies the highest status in the hierarchy of church holidays, believers celebrate it in the same way as Sunday. This Friday, Catholics are allowed to eat meat.

The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus falls on a different date each year, but it’s always Friday. The holiday is celebrated in different parts of the world. The Sacre-Coeur Basilica, the most popular temple dedicated to the veneration of the Heart of Jesus, was built in Paris. In Catholic Poland it is a public holiday. Many institutions and companies do not work on this day.
