Why we celebrate Eiffel Tower Day?
On the solemn day of 31 March 1889, the Eiffel Tower, Paris’ main landmark, was inaugurated. At first, many called it an architectural disgrace. But over time it has become a major symbol of France and attracts millions of tourists every year.
The construction of the Eiffel Tower was timed to coincide with the World’s Industrial Exhibition in France. The 984-foot structure was designed by Gustave Eiffel. The construction in a constructivist style served as an arch. It was scheduled to be demolished in 1909. This did not happen because the top of the tower proved to be a good location for radio antennas and later television transmitters.
What Do People Do?
Residents of France and visitors to the country can celebrate the birthday of the symbol of the city with a meal in one of the Eiffel Tower’s establishments. They can have a photo shoot or picnic in front of it. On that day they can go on a tour or buy another souvenir with the outline of the architectural masterpiece. The city of Paris organises colourful illumination shows, themed exhibitions and performances on the anniversary.
How to Celebrate Eiffel Tower Day?
Eiffel Tower Day is not an official holiday in France. People celebrate it at their own discretion. Some people queue up in the morning to visit the Iron Lady. Some prefer to sit quietly at home in the evening over tea and cake in the form of a tower.
Residents of other countries can celebrate the day by taking a virtual tour of the Eiffel Tower, looking at photos from different times, and reading relevant articles. It’s also a great day to start saving for a trip to France.
Interesting facts about the Eiffel Tower
- The construction of the structure was completed in record time. The construction took 2 years, 2 months and 5 days.
- The design of the tower was based on the principles of bionics.
- On the opening day, Gustave Eiffel himself hoisted the French flag to the top of the iron tower. In order to do so he had to climb over more than 1,500 steps.
- The night lighting of the Iron Lady is protected by copyright and is a work of art.
- For more than 40 years, the tower has been the tallest structure in the world.
