Why we celebrate World Children’s Day?
World Children’s Day is an international holiday dedicated to highlighting the issue of protecting children. The decision to establish the holiday was taken during the World Conference on the Protection of Children in 1925. But it was officially approved only 24 years later in Paris, thanks to the congress of the International Democratic Women’s Federation. Then, people began to celebrate it annually on June 1. In many countries, Children’s Day is held on other dates. For example, some peoples hold the holiday on November 20, in honor of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, agreed by the UN General Assembly.
Childhood is an important part of a person’s life, when moral values, personal character, and worldview are formed in his/her mind. All knowledge from childhood is transferred to adulthood. Despite the development of society, child slavery and other types of crimes against children continue to exist around the world. For a child to grow up healthy and happy, he/she must have a prosperous childhood. Thus, it is important to protect him/her from physical and psychological threats that can cause irretrievable harm.
What Do People Do?
Childhood is an important part of a person’s life, when moral values, personal character, and worldview are formed in his/her mind. All knowledge from childhood is transferred to adulthood. For a child to grow up healthy and happy, he/she must have a prosperous childhood. Thus, it is important to protect him/her from physical and psychological threats that can cause irretrievable harm.
On Children’s Day, people all over the world prepare for this holiday. They arrange various events and competitions for children. Children get free tickets to rides in amusement parks or cartoons in movies. Volunteers collect humanitarian aid for needy children. Of course, adults surround children with care every day, but this particular day reminds us why it is important to take care of them. Parents have a great responsibility in raising a child; so, the Global Day of Parents is also celebrated on this day in many countries.
State authorities develop various campaigns that are dedicated to the interests of the child. In 1999, the International Labor Organization adopted the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labor. In 2012, the UN Secretary-General led an initiative to educate children so they can go to school and develop their skills unhindered. There are systems of guardianship and authorized bodies that monitor the well-being of their lives.
How to Celebrate World Children’s Day?
You can celebrate World Children’s Day with the whole family. Go to events that are organized in your city or visit your child’s favorite entertainment place. You can also take part in humanitarian assistance to needy children and families. Donate toys, clothes, or money to orphanages or charities.
In many countries, World Children’s Day is declared a day off, or at least the working day is shortened. Schools arrange mini-vacations, and parents are released from work early so that they can celebrate this day happily with their families.
Parades are held for children in Nigeria (the holiday is celebrated on May 27) and Norway (on May 17). Fun games are arranged and free treats are given to children in South Africa on the first Saturday of November. In China, children can visit the Forbidden City for free. In Japan, they separately celebrate a holiday for girls and boys on March 3 and May 5, respectively. “Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work” Day is celebrated in Mexico on April 30, and parents can spend a working day with their children. In the US, World Children’s Day is celebrated on several different dates, but mostly on the second Sunday of June.
