Why we celebrate Sacrifice Our Wants For Others’ Needs Sunday?
It’s the most controversial day of the Be Kind To Humankind Week. Lorraine Hara suggested holding such a week-long event to decrease human indifference to each other. Each of the days is dedicated to a particular indifference problem. Part of the population of our planet can’t fill their basic needs. These include, for example, food, clothes, or security. Therefore, Sunday is dedicated to sacrificing one’s wants for others’ needs.
What Do People Do?
On this day of the week, people think about how they could help others. But not everyone is ready to sacrifice anything: time, money, or other things. They believe that if they do so, they’ll have to ask for help themselves. But this isn’t necessarily the case. People should make considered decisions. If donating directly threatens your life, don’t do it. But if there is no threat, your sacrifice will save other people’s life.
Besides, people rethink their priorities. They reconsider their life values. Some people sacrifice their work (or rather, their ambition to earn more money) to pay attention to beloved ones. Some may donate money to charity instead of buying a car. The deeds may different, but they have something in common – help.
Help was an effective accelerant for development of civilizations. Scientists understood it when archaeologists found an ancient burial place. One of the buried had a broken hip. At that time, such an injury left him no chance of survival. But studies have shown that he died many years after the injury, i.e., people no longer left the injured to die, but took care of them and helped them to live on. This resulted in longer life expectancy. The elderly could transfer more knowledge to the young, therefore, the humankind development accelerated.

The Sacrifice Our Wants For Others’ Needs Sunday is celebrated on the last Sunday of August. The event is held as part of the Be Kind To Humanity Week. It’s mainly celebrated in English-speaking countries. Rethink your values on this day. Try to help those in need. If you doubt, think of the story of the ancient man with a broken hip. Surrounding people sacrificed their safety for his life, since in this situation, they became easy target for predators. But their sacrifice promoted major development of the humankind. The same way, your sacrifice can bring something great.
