Why we celebrate Be Kind To Humankind Week?
There are many tragic events that we could have avoided if people had been kinder to each other. Indifference, insult, and anger have incorrigible consequences. Thus, people should keep cool and act according to conscience in any situation. Empathy, support, and a good deed is always a winning option. It is praiseworthy and important both now and always. But not all people can do good easily. Some people completely forget about its existence. The Be Kind To Humankind Week aims to changing the situation.
Lorraine Hara founded the Be Kind To Humankind Week in 1988 after an accident. The accident took place in her hometown Toms River, New Jersey. Two men were on a boat at quite a popular pond. All of a sudden, there was an accident, and their boat sank. The men were floating and calling for help. People were passing by on good boats, where there still was enough place for men. But they ignored the pleas for help. It lasted so long that one of the men died. At the last moment, people on a frail boat managed to save the second man. The Be Kind To Humankind Week was established in commemoration of this accident. This is to reminder of the consequences indifference can have and the ones of kindness and empathy.
What Do People Do?
Throughout the week, people try to do only good deeds. Whenever possible, they help each other. Many celebrities, such as Oprah Winfrey, support this event. Good deeds consist of many aspects. So, each day of the week is dedicated to a specific topic. This approach makes it possible to spend a fruitful week. Besides, this makes it more interesting.
Daily topics of the Be Kind To Humankind Week:
- Sacrifice Our Wants For Others’ Needs Sunday – try to refuse what you want for other people’s sake. Joy and gratitude for help will make you feel pleased.
- Motorist Consideration Monday – be more patient and careful when driving. Be sure to respect others and don’t let your driving be aggressive. After all, other lives also depend on your driving.
- Touch-A-Heart Tuesday – is a good occasion to confess your feelings to another person. As well as learn to listen to your heart.
- Willing-To-Lend-A-Hand Wednesday – offer your help to people around you. Your help doesn’t necessarily have to be material. You can support a person in trouble and give him or her good advice.
- Thoughtful Thursday – it’s high time to think about your actions’ influence on other people. Think of the many good deeds you’ve done during the year and keep this up!
- Forgive Your Foe Friday – let all the old insults go. Perhaps, your enemy has long been striving to become your friend, but can’t admit it? Take the first step. Life is not long enough to waste it on enmity.
- Speak Kind Words Saturday – feel free to talk about what you like. Choose the right words if you don’t like something. Pay more compliments to yourself and people around you.
Indeed, it’s hard to be kind 24/7, but you can try as least. This week will be a reminder and support so that you don’t give up.

The Be Kind To Humankind Week begins every year on August 25. Each year begins with a different day of the week. This event is mostly celebrated in English-speaking countries. Spend this week doing more good deeds. Start with paying attention to your beloved ones. We can’t destroy the universal evil, but we can increase the number of good things.
