Why we celebrate National Garlic Day
National Garlic Day is celebrated annually on April 19. Garlic is a versatile plant that is used for both cooking and dish seasoning and medicinal purposes. The plant makes any food tastier and healthier because it contains many biologically active substances that fight various diseases.
What Do People Do
The beneficial properties of garlic have been known since ancient times. At first, it was used only for medicinal purposes. People did not add the plant to food because of its pungent odor (for the same reason, garlic is called a “smelly rose”). It is known that the Egyptians ate garlic to be stronger and better at building pyramids. Once they even raised a rebellion when they did not get garlic.
In the Middle Ages, people believed that garlic repelled vampires. In fact, this myth appeared because of one disease called porphyria. People suffering from this disease had a pale complexion, many blisters on the skin, and other signs that people took for signs of vampirism. A doctor found that when eating garlic, sick people worsened their condition which caused pain. After that, garlic began to be considered poison for vampires.
Nowadays, many people enjoy eating garlic, especially during a cold since it is an essential ingredient in many curing recipes. Many gardeners plant garlic next to vegetables and berries because it protects them from many parasites. This small plant is so beneficial that a whole holiday has been established in its honor.
During National Garlic Day, people hold fairs and festivals and add garlic to any dish. For example, they added it not only to pasta but also to ice cream and chocolate. They also decorate clothes, shop windows, and all the other staff. This is a true paradise for garlic lovers.
How to Celebrate National Garlic Day
NationalGarlic Day is a great opportunity to gather with your loved ones at the dinner table and celebrate the holiday deliciously. You can sew a costume in the form of garlic or a vampire and go to the festival with your friends. Take fun photos with the #NationalGarlicDay tag. Discover a variety of flavors. This holiday is celebrated in many countries, particularly, Gilroy, California which is considered the “garlic capital of the world”.
