Why we celebrate International No Diet Day
Everyone has ever heard that an acquaintance is on a diet or has limited him-/herself to food. This is a rather difficult task from a physiological and psychological point of view. People harm their health to meet the standards of beauty that society imposes. This was the case with Mary Evans Young from the UK, who suffered from diets. When she was a child, her peers called her fat, so she began to restrict herself to food to lose weight. But one should distinguish between a careful approach to adjusting the diet, which is selected according to the needs of the body (this is done by nutritionists), and thoughtless refusal of food. After all, food contains many useful chemical components that are vital for maintaining human life. But Mary Evans Young realized this when she became ill with anorexia. Having defeated the disease, she decided to help the people around her learn to appreciate and love themselves for who they are. This is how the International No Diet Day was born. It has been celebrated annually on May 6 since 1992.
What Do People Do
The day against diets was celebrated in the UK for the first time, and then, people from other countries supported it. Initially, the date was set for May 5, but the Americans were concerned that another event, Cinco de Mayo, had been already celebrating that day. Mary Evans Young had no problem agreeing to move the holiday to the next day, just on the day of her birthday.
A light blue ribbon serves as the symbol of no dieting. Its color symbolizes a commitment to high ideals, honesty, and nobility. Various organizations such as the International Size Association (ISAA) and the National Organization for Women (NOW) actively support this holiday. ISAA developed the Love Your Body campaign, which promotes the acceptance of all forms of the female body. International No Diet Day aims to help people accept themselves, dispel complexes about appearance, and give up radical harmful diets.
How to Celebrate International No Diet Day
Checking your body’s needs will be a great way to celebrate International No Diet Day. Take tests and check which vitamins your body lacks. Surround yourself with things you love, compliment people you know, and refuse strict diets that harm your health. Cook your favorite dish and enjoy eating what you like. Listen to yourself and take care of yourself. International No Diet Day is celebrated in India, the USA, Canada, Sweden, and other countries.
