Why we celebrate International Day of Veterinary Medicine?
International Veterinary Medicine Day is held to thank veterinarians for their hard daily work and to mark issues related to animal safety, welfare and health. The celebration provides an opportunity for many people to learn more about the role of veterinarians in the public health system and the importance of timely identification of diseases. It elevates significant issues about the intimate relationship between human and animal.
International Veterinary Day first officially started at the beginning of the 21st century. It was organised by the World Veterinary Association (WVA). At first it was only intended to show people the work of veterinarians and discuss pet care. However, the event ceased to be a mere education after a while.
What Do People Do?
Veterinarians from different places – clinics, zoos and kennels – come to celebrate the day. The festival is also open to those who are new to the profession or are studying it, pet owners and volunteers. Professionals arrange informative seminars, lectures and conferences. Some particularly successful veterinary associations receive an award for the greatest contribution to their cause. WVA has taken care of this by partnering with HealthforAnimals. Individual employees are also honoured and awarded certificates and diplomas.
How to Celebrate International Day of Veterinary Medicine?
This holiday is celebrated annually in the USA on December 9. You can also take part in the celebration and make a contribution. Donate to an animal charity, volunteer at an event, attend a lecture or seminar, post on social media or take a pet from the kennel.
