Why we celebrate International Day for Tolerance?
The International Day for Tolerance helps people reveal their individuality and live in safety. After all, everyone has a right to live with dignity. Tolerance means accepting and respecting someone else’s world view, religion, culture, race or lifestyle. Recently, people have become more tolerant towards each other, but hatred still exists. Therefore, it is important to inform people about tolerance in order to eradicate hatred and live in peace.
In 1995, UNESCO adopted a Declaration of Principles on Tolerance to mark its 50th anniversary. It focuses on methods of dealing with intolerance. Two years later, the UN General Assembly proposed celebrating the International Day for Tolerance. The UN says that tackling intolerance is one of its main objectives.
What Do People Do?
On this day, social events are held to strengthen relationships between people. These events explain the importance of cultural diversity and the ability to express oneself. Children are taught to listen to each other and to respect each other’s opinions. Every two years, UNESCO organizes the award ceremony for the Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence.
