Why we celebrate Human Rights Day?
In 1948, the UN General Assembly put through the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The holiday was formally established in 1950 following the approval of a decree in which the Assembly invited interested states to declare it Human Rights Day on December 10. Since then the holiday is held annually on a worldwide scale.
The day is kept to promote freedom, equality, justice and peace. Everyone has rights without reference to your religion, colour, sex or social status.
What Do People Do?
A single theme is chosen each year to draw attention to a particular aspect of the human rights work. There are usually numerous political campaigns and summits along with social events focusing on matter of human rights. It is also customary to award the five-year United Nations Prize for Human Rights and the Nobel Peace Prize. Numerous governmental institutions working in the area of human rights also plan particular celebrations to coincide with the day, along with many civil society associations.
How to Celebrate Human Rights Day?
To celebrate Human Rights Day you can launch a Facebook campaign, change your profile picture to put up a banner that celebrates Human Rights Day. If you have the funds, you can do a charity t-shirt and other outfit distribution. You can also buy armbands with slogans about the day, involve as many people as possible in this activity.
For something new, watch Eleanor Roosevelt’s speech on human rights in 1948. Listen to the first President of the UN Human Rights Council talk about the value of recognising universal human rights. You can also learn more about peace projects aimed at strengthening human rights.
