Why we celebrate Janmashtami?

Janmashtami is a Hindu festival, which is celebrated by many regions of India. In some places of the country Janmashtami is called Shrikrishna Jayanti. According to the Hindu calendar, Janmashtami is celebrated on Ashtah (the eighth day) of Krishna Pakshi (dark two weeks) in the month of Shravana or Bhadra (in the Hindu calendar there is a leap month once every three years).

Janmashtami is also a public holiday in Bangladesh. One of the most important Hindu festivals, Janmastami (Krishna Jayanti) is Lord Krishna’s birthday, the eighth reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, who gave an important message of the Bhagwat-Gita, the guidelines for every Hindu. According to tradition, Krishna was born in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. In this region, the common practice is the performance of Krishna Lila, a folk drama consisting of scenes from the life of Krishna.

Many customs have developed in different parts of India for many years. They are all based on stories from Krsna’s life. For example, they say that in childhood Krishna loved butter and milk so much that they needed to be kept out of reach. This story is reflected in many games for children.

What Do People Do?

In all the temples of India, on the day of Janmashtami, prayers and ceremonies are held. On the eve of the day, people can fast, pray until midnight, the time when Krishna was born. In Tamil Nadu, oil-bearing posts with pots with money are installed tied to the top. Boys dressed like Krishna are trying to climb these pillars to get money. At this time, spectators pour water on them. In Maharashtra, where the festival is known as Govinda, pots with buttermilk are hung high above the streets.

How to Celebrate Janmashtami?

Janmashtami is a state holiday in Tamil Nadu. All organizations are closed. It is known that on August 24, Janmashtami is celebrated in Bihar, Delhi, Kashmir and other cities of India.
