Why we celebrate Feast of the Immaculate Conception?
The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is an important feast in the Roman Catholic Church. It is also called the Day of the Immaculate Conception or the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. It commemorates the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary in the womb of her mother, St Anne. The Virgin Mary was freed from original sin and led a sinless life. She received this liberation because of the contribution of her son Jesus Christ.
The first celebration of the Day of the Immaculate Conception originated in Syria, but the definition of the Immaculate Conception has been the subject of much debate. Pope Pius IX put an end to that controversy and defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, 1854. Pope Pius IX established an official and compulsory commemoration of this day, which Catholics still observe to this day.
What Do People Do?
In the Roman Catholic Church, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception is an obligatory and important celebration. On this day mass is celebrated and it is compulsory to go to church. In Rome, the statue of the Virgin Mary is decorated with a beautiful wreath sent by the Vatican. Festivals and celebrations are arranged in the cities. In Spain, priests wear blue robes. This privilege has been granted to them by the papal throne because they support the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. This dogma is only recognised by Catholics, so the celebration differs in other Christian denominations.
How to Celebrate Feast of the Immaculate Conception?
The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated every year on 8 December. In some countries this day is a public holiday and is considered a non-working day. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is a public holiday in Austria, the Vatican, Italy, Portugal, Spain and some other countries.
