Why we celebrate World Penguin Day?
Every year on 25 April, Penguin Day is celebrated around the world. The purpose of the holiday is to remind people of the importance of preserving the diversity of wildlife and caring for the environment and nature.
Penguins are amazing creatures: they can swim perfectly but cannot fly. These seabirds are regarded as symbols of Antarctica. World Penguin Day is also a time when penguins migrate to the mainland to mate and incubate. It is no coincidence that 25 April also speaks of the danger humans pose to the wildlife world. Since the 18th century seafarers have exterminated the penguin population, and in 1918 the number of penguins dropped to a critical minimum. Only the introduction of strict conservation measures helped the species recover. However, their numbers are now being adversely affected by climate change.
What Do People Do?
On this day, educational and entertaining quizzes, open classes and quests for children are held all over the world. There are also exhibitions in museums and lectures for adults. People of all ages can also attend screenings of documentary films about penguins.
How to Celebrate World Penguin Day?
The holiday is not a public holiday. But that can’t stop you from visiting themed events or the zoo. If there is a penguin habitat in town, April 25th is a great opportunity to see these unique birds for yourself.
Interesting facts about penguins
- The structure of their wings is more like flippers. Because of this feature, as well as a large layer of fat and dense plumage, the birds cannot take off, but are good at withstanding the cold.
- The largest member of the species is the Emperor Penguin. It can be up to 4ft tall and weigh 88lb or more.
- What we think of as their teeth are actually spines. The birds need them to hold fish in their beak and swallow them whole.
- The penguin effect is so named because of the way they behave. A group of birds will stand on the shore until a daredevil is found. As soon as he dives into the water, everyone will follow him.
- Penguins cannot stand up on their own if they fall.
