Why we celebrate World Hepatitis Day?
Hepatitis is a serious disease that causes over 1 million deaths every year. Hepatitis viruses infect liver, which results in cirrhosis and cancer. The disease may remain unnoticed for a long time. Therefore, an infected person who knows nothing of his illness can infect others. In a few years, he’ll surely find out that there is one of the viruses in his body, but it may be too late. That’s why we celebrate the World Hepatitis Day. Its purpose is to inform the population of the Earth about this dangerous disease. If they diagnose the disease on time, treat it and prevent it, then one day people will be able to overcome it.
This holiday is celebrated on July 28 – Baruch Samuel Blumberg’s birthday. He discovered the hepatitis virus and received the Nobel Prize for it. Statistically, every 12th person on the planet carries the virus. The number exceed those infected with HIV and suffering from cancer.
What Do People Do?
The World Hepatitis Alliance and the WHO organize a variety of campaigns. Every year, they choose a topic, a place, and a motto of the events held to inform people about this disease. Scientists gather at conferences and discuss new treatment methods. Sponsors are attracted to finance institutions that study and treat the disease. People learn about preventing hepatitis, take tests, and support each other.
How to Celebrate World Hepatitis Day?
This event is annually celebrated all over the world on July 28. On this day, anyone can be tested for the hepatitis virus free of charge. No one is immune to this disease. Talk about it with your relatives. Don’t be afraid to find out that you’re infected. Be afraid to be infected without knowing about it.
