Why we celebrate St Swithun’s Day?

St Swithun’s Day is celebrated in honor of the Anglo-Saxon Bishop Swithun (or Swithin) of the 9th century. This is quite an interesting holiday because the weather for the coming days is determined on this day. You can even call this holiday a folk tradition. To better understand this event, let’s talk a little about the bishop himself.

Bishop Swithun

Bishop of Winchester Swithun lived many years ago, but his fame still exists. He was kind, fair, and helped those in need. If there was a feast, then the poor were invited to it. He was highly respected and appreciated in royal society. The king of Wessex gave him a tenth of the kingdom so that Swithin would build churches on these lands. Yet, the bishop is well known for his miracles. Once, he returned a whole basket with broken eggs to its original form. And when Queen Elfgifa was facing a difficult test, he appeared to her in a dream and promised help. The test was to walk barefoot over red-hot knives. Indeed, the queen calmly walked through them, having left unscathed.

Before his death, the bishop ordered to be buried next to the cathedral, and not inside. He wished that rain could wash his body. Everything was done that way. For several years, the saint was quietly buried in the open air, but one day, a church reform began. Then, on July 15, his remains were carried to the AEthelwold Basilica. After that, incredibly heavy, torrential rain was pouring for 40 days. The faithful took this as St Swithun’s indignation. Moreover, years later, they noticed an interconnection between the weather on July 15th and the weather of the following days. What kind of weather will be on the date when the remains of the saint were reburied, the same weather will be in the following days. This is how St Swithun’s Day was born. The bishop now rests in present-day Winchester Cathedral.

What Do People Do?

In Britain, Swithin is called the “patron saint of the weather”. In the event of a drought, it is customary for people to pray to him for the rain to come. On St Swithun’s Day, people monitor the weather. They say:

“St Swithin’s day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St Swithin’s day if thou be fair
For forty days will rain na mair”

It is also permitted to eat apples from trees planted by the bishop.

How to Celebrate St Swithun’s Day?

St Swithun’s Day is celebrated annually on July 15 in England and July 2 in Norway. This holiday is recognized in the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches. It is a Minor Feast in the Anglican Church. Solemn church services are held in memory of the holy bishop.
