Why we celebrate School Principals’ Day?
Principals’ Day is celebrated annually on 1 May. This holiday is dedicated to the heads of educational institutions. The day-to-day work of principals is related to improving the quality of education, improving the conditions in which children learn, and shaping a positive image of the school.
The holiday was approved at the initiative of Janet Dellaria, an educator from Trout Creek, Michigan. Many parents believe that the backbone of the school is the teaching staff. However, the educational process would not be possible without a competent head of the organisation. This holiday, according to the teacher and her supporting teachers’ associations, is needed to remind how important the role of a school principal is in the successful upbringing of the younger generation.
What Do People Do?
The day is a great occasion to say nice words or give gifts to school leaders as they celebrate. Children can organise a themed concert or a tea party with the headmaster and teachers. The hashtag #SchoolPrincipalsDay is popular on social media. Pupils post pictures with their teachers, tell interesting stories about them or write words of appreciation. And you can congratulate the headmaster of your school or your child’s school in a similar way.
How to Celebrate School Principals’ Day?
School Principal’s Day is not a day off. In films and TV series, the heads of educational centres administrations are often portrayed as evil and stupid people. In reality, they are quite different, although there are exceptions. The job of a head of an educational organisation is difficult, it requires stress-resistance and the ability to take responsibility. So do not hesitate to congratulate the headmasters on their professional holiday!

- The word ‘school’ is translated from Greek as “leisure”.
- In ancient Greece, teachers were slaves who accompanied children to and from school. The word itself means “to guide a child”.
- Every year on 1 September the school year begins in 122 countries around the world.
- Most school principals are active teachers or have had teaching experience in the past.
- On average, the head of an educational institution works more than 60 hours a week. Although the statutory work norm is 40 hours.
