Why we celebrate Orthodox Good Friday?
Orthodox Good Friday comes on Friday before Orthodox Easter Sunday. The first ceremony is held on Good Friday. Women of flowers make “Epitaphios”, imitating the funeral ridge of Christ. Together with him, a ceremony is held on the streets of villages or neighborhoods of cities. In some countries, for example in Crete, the ceremony is accompanied by the burning of effigies of Judas Iscariot. A great celebration also takes place on the Sabbath, for the triumphant return of Christ. At midnight, all the lights of the churches went out, symbolizing the darkness that enveloped Christ as He passed through the underworld. Then a priest appears, holding a lit candle in his hands and repeating “This is Light …”, and uses the Sacred Flame to light the candles of nearby believers. These believers then share the Light with their neighbors until the whole church and courtyard are lit by candles.
What Do People Do?
After midnight, families and friends meet to eat chopped lamb, rice, dill and lemon soup. This festival is of great importance throughout Greece, especially for its Easter holidays, Hydra, Corfu, Pyrgi on Chios, Olympos on Karpathos and the Monastery of St. John on Patmos.
How to Celebrate?
Orthodox Good Friday is celebrated in Cyprus, Greece, Lebanon and the Republic of Macedonia. Many government agencies, schools and banks also do not work that day. The embassies of these countries are closed on Good Friday. In Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States, there are no federal Orthodox Easter holidays.
