Why we celebrate National No Dirty Dishes Day?

National No Dirty Dishes Day is celebrated annually on 18 May in the United States. Many people don’t like wasting time washing mountains of used kitchen utensils, so the holiday is a great opportunity to skip this phase of regular housecleaning for at least one day.

Little is known about the history of the holiday or its date. It is commonly associated with the invention of disposable tableware. The first example was invented back in 1867 by Hermann Henschel. The use of individual containers for food and drink later helped to prevent the spread of many diseases such as tuberculosis.

The first disposable dishes were made of paper. Now they are made of plastic, pressed cardboard, wood, corn starch and other eco materials.

What Do People Do?

National No Dirty Dishes Day is not usually associated with large celebrations, but with eating out or ordering food delivered. This holiday is not a day off, which doesn’t stop us from celebrating it properly. Many people go out of their way to celebrate this holiday. The day before the event, they prepare a lot of food so that it takes up a lot of space on the crockery. The next day, they don’t eat all the food. So the dishes don’t end up dirty, but just busy. Lifehack!

How to Celebrate National No Dirty Dishes Day?

You can visit your favourite cafes and restaurants that day to have breakfast, lunch and dinner with friends, family or on your own. Sounds amazing! A holiday is also a great opportunity to give up cooking and cleaning: you can stay home in peace and quiet and order your favourite food. It could be anything from pizza, hot dogs, fried chicken, salads or hot meals in individual containers. Couriers usually bring disposable cutlery and napkins with your order, so you don’t have to dirty up reusable dishes. And if the situation does force you to put some of your food in a separate container – use disposable products and then quietly throw them away.

Fun facts about tableware

  1. The knife is the most ancient utensil in the world.
  2. In ancient Russia, the tableware was made for two or three people.
  3. In the Middle Ages, individual crockery was a luxury.
  4. Arabian kitchen utensils were highly valued all over the world because of the abundance of different ornaments on them.
  5. The colour of the plate affects digestion: bright colours encourage people to eat more, while calm colours appease their appetite.

Why we celebrate Stepmother’s Day?

Stepmother’s Day in the United States is celebrated annually on the Sunday after Mother’s Day. This holiday is dedicated to women who have managed to accept and love children who were originally not their own.

The holiday was initiated by Lizzy Capuzzi, a little girl from Pennsylvania. In 2000, she decided to make her stepmother Joyce happy and gave her a holiday on the Sunday after the official Mother’s Day. This was the girl’s way of expressing her love and gratitude to the woman. Joyce was touched by Lizzie’s act. Together they decided to send a letter to Senator Rick Santorum in which they told him about the holiday invented by the little girl. The man addressed the story in the Senate on July 11, thus supporting the adoptive parents and Lizzy Capuzzi’s great idea. Since then the holiday has been officially adopted, becoming a regular occurrence.

What Do People Do?

Children make various crafts and cards to congratulate their stepmothers. They can have a cosy family evening and spend time together. It could be a holiday in nature, going to a cafe or watching a film.

It’s hard to love someone else’s child as your own. Only people with a big heart and boundless kindness are capable of it. Despite the fact that popular culture associates the image of a stepmother with a cruel and oppressive woman, millions of non-biological mothers all over the planet are raising their spouses’ children with dignity and sincere love.

How to Celebrate Stepmother’s Day?

This day is not a weekend or a major event. However, it is a great opportunity for a child to spend time with their stepmother, thank her for everything and give her a memorable gift. On this holiday you can also watch films about families where children are raised by step-parents, together with their relatives or alone.

Interesting facts about the stepmother

  1. A stepmother, like a stepfather, has no legal rights to a child unless she adopts one.
  2. In many countries, children are more likely to live with their biological mother and stepmother than with their biological father and stepmother.
  3. Stepmothers are more prone to depression and stress than mothers of children.
  4. More than 40% of Americans live with a biological parent and stepmother.
  5. There are special books and courses for stepmothers to help them connect with their spouse’s children.

Why we celebrate World Give Day?

World Give Day is celebrated all over the world on 4 May every year. The event encourages people to take part in charitable actions and to give useful gifts not only to those in need, but also to their loved ones.

The holiday was established by the GiveForward.com platform. The site was launched on August 14, 2008. The activity of the online service is connected with raising funds for specific people, groups or organizations. Each person can choose to whom they would like to give the necessary amount of money. Applications on the website are placed directly by representatives of companies in need of support.

Since the launch of the platform, people have been actively using it. And not only to place advertisements, but also to help financially. And in 2010 users were happy to support the initiative of the website to establish World Give Day. Since 2011, the event has been held regularly, even outside the site. A similar event is celebrated on 5 September, called International Day of Charity.

What Do People Do?

This holiday is not a day off, nor does it involve festivals or high-profile events. Charity does not require publicity. The desire to help people in difficult life situations should come from the heart, not from the need to assert oneself. The same applies to gifts: giving is an act of kindness, not the realisation of mercantile goals. A person should be unselfish when it comes to helping.

How to Celebrate World Give Day?

On World Give Day you can help all organisations that you feel strongly about: donate blood, buy clothes and toys for children’s homes, buy cereals or food for orphanages. Don’t forget to give small gifts to your relatives. These can be inexpensive but necessary items. Don’t be shy about making something with your own hands: parents will be pleased to receive a small card, as attention is the most important thing.

Interesting facts about charity and gifts

  1. Charity has been around as long as society has existed.
  2. Gifts are often valued below their real value.
  3. Almsgiving was the most common form of charity in past centuries.
  4. Gifts for children should be tactile.
  5. Women are more likely to donate than men.

Why we celebrate Bring Flowers to Someone Day?

Bring Flowers to Someone Day is celebrated annually on 15 May. This holiday is the perfect occasion to give a beautiful bouquet to a beloved and close person to express your love and appreciation.

The origins of Bring Flowers to Someone Day

There is no information about the history of the holiday or the date chosen to celebrate it. However, the roots of this event go back to the distant past. As far back as Ancient Greece, Rome and China, people associated flowers with certain human qualities, feelings and states. With the help of messages based on the symbolism of this or that bud, girls in the harems of the rulers of the Ottoman Empire communicated with each other in secret. The love dialogues, called Selam, were also based on the language of plants, interspersed with rhyming phrases.

The tradition of such communication spread from Turkey to conservative England. In the Victorian era, lovers were uncomfortable expressing their feelings, flirting and engaging in open dialogue. That’s why floriography – the language of flowers – was actively developed at that time. Each of the plants was endowed with a certain meaning. A young man giving a girl a red rose without thorns was a declaration of love at first sight.

What Do People Do?

The name of the holiday speaks for itself – on this day people present each other with flowers. Many people put a special meaning into it and choose flowers carefully. Some people don’t make any sense, they just bring joy to someone with a bouquet from their heart.

How to Celebrate Bring Flowers to Someone Day?

There are no holidays for Bring Flowers to Someone Day, and it is not a public holiday. However, the meaning of this event is not a large-scale celebration. On this day, pay attention to your beloved one. Visit a flower shop, ask a florist to choose the right bouquet for you and deliver it in person or via courier. You can also buy your favourite flowers for yourself, read about their significance, even sow seeds yourself in pots on your windowsill or in the garden.

Interesting facts about flowers

  1. The tulip is not only a beautiful flower, but also an edible plant. It is a relative of asparagus, onions and garlic.
  2. The white flowers are actually colourless; they reflect the sun’s rays.
  3. The plants do not have a black tint. It’s an optical illusion: the buds can be either burgundy or dark purple.
  4. The most expensive orchid in the world is the Rothschild shoe orchid or Paphiopedilum rothschildianum. It first blooms at only 15 years of age.
  5. The oldest rose in the world grows in Hildesheim, Germany. It is more than 1,000 years old.

Why we celebrate 404 Day?

404 Day is a holiday associated with the World Wide Web. Some say it’s unofficial Webmaster’s Day, some say it’s International Internet Day. In the U.S., it is about raising awareness about proper filtering of information from the web. Either way, the event is directly related to the World Wide Web.

The history of the holiday is unknown, but its date was not chosen by chance: 4.04 is reminiscent of a 404 error. This is the standard HTTP response code for a “dead” link. This error is considered the most common on the Internet, so it is known to many of its active users.

What Do People Do?

Internet users remember this holiday, on the expanses of which they actively share funny pictures about this type of error or tell about the problems in which it occurred.

Nevertheless, it is no coincidence that several holidays are combined under the date at once: the webmaster works to create sites that are then posted on the Internet. Links to various resources can contain both useful information and content that sometimes needs to be censored. But don’t be overzealous about restricting information. It’s important to keep track of which links should be blocked and which should be left available. Sometimes sites with useful content are blocked while malicious ones remain open. This is a common problem with many school resources.

How to Celebrate 404 Day?

404 Day is not a day off; there are no special events on this holiday. This event should be celebrated in the evening at the computer. You can browse interesting sites, order a T-shirt with a 404 print. It is also worth reading about online professions or even take a course in one of them to master a sought-after specialty.

Interesting facts about the Internet

  1. The global network has a patron saint – Saint Isidore of Seville.
  2. About 5 billion people are active users of the Internet.
  3. On average, each of them spends about 7 hours a day online.
  4. With the advent of smartphones, the vast majority of Internet surfers began to use them to get online.
  5. The most popular language of requests and websites is English.

Why we celebrate National Atheist Day?

National Atheist Day is celebrated annually on April 1 in the United States. This holiday is dedicated to people who do not believe in the existence of divine powers. About 150 million people around the world consider themselves atheists.

The holiday originated on the Internet. In 2003, a story was published there about a Florida resident who asked the American Civil Liberties Union to provide a holiday for non-believers. According to the citizen, numerous religious dates discriminated against the feelings of atheists. After filing the lawsuit, a judge ruled that April 1, Fool’s Day, could be a great date to celebrate Atheist Day. There is no reliable information as to whether this story is true. But all people far from faith and church liked the idea of celebrating the event on that day.

What Do People Do?

National Atheist Day is held modestly, in the shadow of the traditional holiday for the date. Usually on April 1, people with similar worldviews communicate in special forums as actively as ever, telling the unenlightened about their worldviews, and debating with religious opponents. In some countries, atheists celebrate their holiday on March 23 or June 6. For believers there is a World Religion Day.

This holiday is not a day off, although it is difficult to call it a holiday in the traditional sense of the word. It does not imply any large-scale events or active social activities. You can spend the day reading books about atheism, discussing it with friends or family. But without arguments and quarrels! Everyone has the right to believe or not to believe. The event is approved to emphasize this.

Interesting facts about atheism

  1. Atheism is widespread in modern society. In the Middle Ages, it was rare because people were fascinated by the ideas of religion and theology.
  2. There are fewer atheists in the United States than in European countries.
  3. More than 50% of nonbelievers are Chinese.
  4. The vast majority of atheists are young men, many with higher education and liberal views.
  5. In some Islamic countries, atheism is equated with terrorism. Even the death penalty can be imposed for such a worldview.

Why we celebrate International Pillow Fight Day?

International Pillow Fight Day is celebrated on the first Saturday in April. This holiday is a great opportunity to get rid of stress.

In 2005, a pillow fight between 3,648 students was held at the University of Albany (New York State) on April 17. This pillow fight was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest ever. Since then, this day has become a holiday and has gained popularity around the world.

The tradition of pillow fights is a university tradition. Columbia University holds such fights at the official level twice a year. Their purpose is to relax students before a session. In such a battle, young people can get rid of accumulated stress, release anxious thoughts, and rest from preparation for tests and exams.

What Do People Do?

In many countries around the world on the International Pillow Fight Day thousands of people come out to the sites organized for this event. Someone wears just comfortable clothes, someone comes to the fight in his pajamas. The main rules of the fight are: remove jewelry and contact lenses, use soft pillows, do not hit photographers and people without weapons.

How to Celebrate International Pillow Fight Day?

It’s not a day off, but organizers purposely try to hold it at a time when most potential participants are free from school or work. You can celebrate this date either by going out for a mass battle or in a tight circle. Try having a pillow fight with family or close friends.

Interesting facts about pillows

  1. High society pillows in ancient Egypt were curved wooden pieces painted with symbols to ward off evil spirits.
  2. The first soft pillows appeared in Ancient Greece.
  3. In Arab countries, these products were considered a sign of prosperity. They were used to decorate homes and ride camels.
  4. In the Middle Ages, pillows were used to warm the legs.
  5. The products could be filled not only with the traditional down, wool and syntepon, but also with herbal gatherings.

Why we celebrate National Babysitters Day?

Every year on the Saturday before Mother’s Day in the United States (the second Sunday in May), National Babysitters Day is celebrated. This holiday is dedicated to the women, girls, and even boys who help mothers take care of their children.

The holiday was established at the initiative of the organization Safety Whys, which conducts special training courses for future babysitters. The project has been in existence since 1989 and was created in Helotes, Texas. Over its many years of activity, it has earned credibility in the eyes of the people of the United States. Therefore, the proposal to celebrate National Babysitters Day in June 2002 was actively supported, and since 2003 the event has become a regular occurrence.

What Do People Do?

Parents congratulate their babysitters or nannies and thank them. Children draw greeting cards for their babysitters or nannies. Babysitters do not replace the mother, but help her when needed. A professional nanny knows how to properly feed and care for a child and play with him. He is also able to provide first aid to the child. Choosing a nanny is a responsible process. Finding a candidate suitable in terms of parenting style, age and experience is difficult, but possible.

How to Celebrate National Babysitters Day?

National Babysitters Day is not a day off, especially for those who celebrate it. On this holiday, you should thank your babysitters for taking care of your child, give her a gift or pay her a bonus.

Interesting facts about the profession

  1. Originally, the work of a nanny was not considered a separate specialty. Basically, there were nannies who looked after other people’s children as a part-time job after their main job.
  2. Babysitters and governesses are not the same thing. Babysitters work with children and their purpose is care and play. Governesses are hired to teach school-age children.
  3. Professional nannies only care for and develop children. Performing household chores is not part of their services. Parents have to either hire a separate person to do this, or pay extra money to their current nanny if she agrees to do extra work.
  4. An hourly rate for a babysitters can range from $5 to $25.
  5. In many rich families, nannies become full members of the family: they live in the same house with the children, go on vacations with them, etc.

Why we celebrate International Day of Families?

The International Day of Families is celebrated annually on May 15 by the inhabitants of all countries. The purpose of the holiday is to remind how important the family is in everyone’s life, why it is necessary to preserve and strengthen this social institution, what problems it may have.

The holiday was established on the initiative of the UN General Assembly on September 20, 1993, although the idea of the holiday originated in 1989. Every year a new theme is chosen to celebrate the International Day of Families. It addresses one of the most pressing issues of concern to unions across the planet: HIV and AIDS, disabilities, technology, social upheaval, etc.

The family forms a person’s personality and provides him or her with certain values and moral guidelines. The well-being of the family largely depends on the stability of society and the support of the state.

What Do People Do?

Every year on the International Day of Families there are concerts, performances of children’s groups, broadcasts on TV, radio and the Internet. Conferences, round tables, and forums are organized for scientists and politicians. Activists organize training sessions for young families, foster parents, and guardians. Contests and entertainment programs are organized for children from low-income and disadvantaged families. Every year on the first Sunday in August Americans celebrate a separate holiday, American Family Day.

How to Celebrate International Day of Families?

International Day of Families is not a day off. But it is still a great opportunity to spend time with your loved ones. On this day, you can attend social events, go for a walk together, go to a cafe or an amusement park. Often we do not have the opportunity to spend more time with our parents or children. Therefore, this holiday is a great opportunity to make up for lost time.

Interesting facts about family

  1. The custom of kissing during marriage came from ancient Rome: the touch of the lips is the seal on the contract to be made.
  2. The tradition of wearing wedding rings originated in Ancient Egypt: love flows through the vein of the fourth finger to the heart.
  3. The life expectancy of married people is longer than that of single people.
  4. In the 4th and 7th years of marriage, many couples go through crisis periods.
  5. The critical age for marriage is 49.

Why we celebrate Oranges and Lemons Day?

Every year in Great Britain every third Thursday in March is celebrated as Oranges and Lemons Day. This day is associated not with the tradition of healthy living, but with a religious holiday and folk song.

Oranges and Lemons Day is a special holiday for St. Clement of Denmark Church. On March 31, 1920, its renewed bells were blessed and decorated with oranges and lemons to commemorate the occasion. Fruit was also distributed to each child at the service. Since that time, the folk song “Oranges and Lemons” has been heard regularly as the holiday bell to the delight of parishioners and visitors. This piece of music reminds people of the importance of family, hope and faith.

What Do People Do?

For many years, the church has held holiday services on Oranges and Lemons Day. The main characters of the holiday are children. They sing songs, act out skits and perform creative numbers.

How to Celebrate Oranges and Lemons Day?

This holiday is not a day off, but for the residents of London it still does not lose its importance. In other countries, it can be celebrated with a vitamin feast. Even if citrus fruits cause an allergic reaction, that’s no reason to get upset. Instead of eating them, you can listen to a children’s song of this holiday, learn its dance with your child. The song “Oranges and Lemons” has been adapted into different languages.

Interesting facts about Oranges and Lemons Day

  1. Oranges and lemons ended up in the church for a reason. It is located next to the river where the shipyard used to be. Sailors unloaded cargo ships there, including some with citrus fruits.
  2. In 1941, St. Clement’s Church was destroyed. But the holiday was still held, although children were given only oranges – lemons were in short supply.
  3. On the holiday, the bells ring the traditional tune four times: at 9 and 12 a.m., 3 and 6 p.m.
  4. The song “Oranges and Lemons” mentions other churches in London.
  5. During the song, children play: two people, an orange and a lemon, stretch out their arms to form an archway, while the others pass under it.
