Why we celebrate National Take Down the Christmas Tree Day?
National Take Down the Christmas Tree Day is a holiday celebrated by Christians. It marks the end of Christmas and is the day of the Epiphany. The holiday was created so that people would find motivation to get rid of their decorations and finally leave all the bad things of the outgoing year behind and start the new year with ease.
The first mention of the Christmas tree dates back to the year 1500, but some sources claim that the traditions associated with it started much earlier. When it comes to the holiday of taking down the Christmas tree, it was invented by the writer James Shoemaker-Galloway. He believed that it was the perfect day to end the festive season on a positive note.
What Do People Do?
On this day, people throw away or put away their Christmas tree if it is artificial, or send it away for recycling if it is real. Some Christmas trees are originally in a frame. In this case, it is worth caring for them, watering them and feeding them with fertiliser. People used to believe that the tree was home to spirits, which is why it was considered so important. Today, on this holiday, all families finally take the decorations out of the house, clean the decorations and pack up the Christmas decorations. Some invite their relatives or friends over to have a party and enjoy the holidays and the old year.

National Take Down the Christmas Tree Day is celebrated in the US and the UK on 6 January. You can also celebrate it by inviting loved ones over for a small feast and also by taking down the decorations. Do not take down your tree or ornaments before or after this day – it’s bad luck. It’s believed that you’ll be haunted by bad luck in the future. Another reason to put the tree away on time is fire safety.
