Why we celebrate Multiple Personality Day?
The holiday calendar for 5 March features National Multiple Identity Day, or also known as dissociative identity disorder (DID). This is the name given to the diagnosis of a patient suffering from split personality. The disorder is rare and little is known about it, which is why the affected person is often perplexed or frightened by others. Psychiatrists state that the disorder has its origin in childhood traumas of a physical, mental or sexual nature, which the child may have suffered before the age of 9. It is a kind of protection for a child’s fragile psyche. National Multiple Personality Day teaches others about compassion, raises awareness and allows you to analyse your own psyche.
National Multiple Personality Day originated in the USA. The exact time of its creation and the initiator is not known.
What Do People Do?
Provide moral support to people with DID and help them accept their diagnosis. Undertake psychological tests to assess their own personality and that of relatives and friends. Attend thematic seminars. Sharing what they have learned on social media, advocating for the protection and care of patients with an AIDS, because their illness came about as a result of a difficult life situation in childhood.
How to Celebrate Multiple Personality Day?
The holiday is not an official holiday. But after work or study, you can read a book or watch a film about split personality cases.
Interesting facts about the illness:
- A patient with DID does not have one coherent personality, but a ‘collective’ of alternative personalities who differ in gender, ethnicity, character, age, voice, erudition and habits. The personalities ‘stand at the helm’ in an arbitrary order and are often unaware of each other.
- Binary personalities affect 2 – 3% of the world’s population, women more often than men. There can be anywhere from two to several hundred alternate personalities.
- “Switching” to another personality is in most cases provoked by stress. The moment itself is accompanied by a headache or fainting.
- DID is successfully treated with a combination of medication, psychotherapy and hypnosis.
