Why we celebrate Maundy Thursday
Maundy Thursday is considered a great Christian holiday, which falls on Thursday before Easter. It symbolizes the washing of the feet and the secret supper from Jesus Christ with the apostles. This is described in the canonical Gospels. This supper was the last for Jesus Christ with his disciples. Maundy Thursday is the 5th day of the Holy Week, the previous day of the Holy Wednesday. The date of celebrating Maundy Thursday falls on the numbers between March 19 and April 22. In 2019, Maundy Thursday will be celebrating on April 18. Liturgy is held on the evening of Great Thursday.
What Do People Do
Maundy Thursday is marked by preparations for the reception of Communion before Easter. This tradition came from Greece, when it was under the Ottoman yoke. At that time, the parish priests were uneducated, the confessions of parishioners were banned, therefore the sacrament was considered a way of remission of sins. On that day it is customary to go to church and receive communion.
How to Celebrate Maundy Thursday
In certain Slavic traditions it is customary to perform processions before the icon with the crucified Christ. It is placed on the clergy.
