Why we celebrate International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day is a celebration of women’s rights, celebrated on 8 March. Every year on this day, important themes such as discrimination and global women’s issues, gender inequality are raised, attention is drawn to women’s contribution to different areas of life and their undervaluation.
The earliest mention of the holiday dates back to the early 20th century. It was organised by the Socialist Party of America. And in 1910 in Germany, at the International Socialist Women’s Conference, it was proposed to celebrate International Women’s Day every year. In Soviet Russia, it was declared a state holiday after women gained the right to vote. It was then that the date of March 8 was chosen. Until the late 1960s, the holiday was especially common only in communist countries. That all changed when it was adopted first by the feminist movement and then by the United Nations.
What Do People Do?
International Women’s Day is celebrated in different countries in different ways. In some, there are protests to draw attention to women’s issues, while in others the holiday has lost its political agenda and is dedicated to the celebration of femininity. Every year, the UN raises an issue related to contributions to different areas of life as well as women’s issues. For example, in 2021 the theme is Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a COVID-19 World, and in 2022, Gender Equality Now for a Sustainable Future.
How to Celebrate International Women’s Day?
In most countries where International Women’s Day is celebrated, it is customary to give women small gifts or flowers. This day is an official holiday in post-Soviet countries, in China and also in some African countries. In Austria, Croatia, Cameroon, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria and Chile, it is not an official holiday, but it is celebrated as well. And in Vietnam, Women’s Day is celebrated twice a year, on 8 March and 20 October.
