Why we celebrate International Migrants Day?
International Migrants Day is an official holiday. It was created to highlight all the difficulties and challenges faced by migrants. Thanks to this event, people are becoming more aware of the importance of security, economic and social conditions in the world. To this day, the number of migrants is constantly rising.
In 1990, the UN General Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. In 2000, it invited most countries to observe International Migrants Day. It is worth noting that 2000 is the official date for the announcement of the celebration, but an unofficial event was already organised in 1997 and 1998. It was something of a thanksgiving for the rights and protection of migrants by several Asian organisations.
What Do People Do?
On this day, various actions, lectures, counselling and seminars are held to explain the laws on immigrants’ rights. Professionals and people working in this field convey important information about human rights and basic opportunities for migrants to others. Myths related to the topic are debunked and many phenomena around the world are explained in detail. Governmental and non-governmental organisations have made plans to further support migrants. In some countries, places have been set up to collect donations, basic necessities.
