Why we celebrate International Dance Day?
International Dance Day is celebrated annually on 2 April. This celebration brings together people of different ages, genders and nationalities in a shared love of the art of dance.
It was established in 1982 by the International Dance Council of UNESCO. The date was not chosen by chance. It is associated with 29th of April 1727. On this day, Jean-Georges Noverre, founder of modern ballet and reformer of the art of movement plastics, was born. It was he who succeeded in separating opera and dance, their independence. He also did away with all the heavy costumes and accessories that impeded dancers’ movement.
The language of dance is universal, understood by everyone, irrespective of country of residence, social status or political views. Every year, on the day of the festival, a talented artist’s message to the world is broadcast. In his speech, he reminds listeners of the beauty of dance and its impact on all areas of society.
What Do People Do?
On International Dance Day, choreographic groups perform various plays and performances for audiences. Exhibitions, open days at art schools and mass flash mobs are organised. Awards and prizes are presented all over the world to outstanding choreographers and dance groups.
How to Celebrate International Dance Day?
International Dance Day is not a day off. It is important to celebrate the day with a focus on aesthetics. You can attend special events or throw a dance party at home. Throw a party with friends or have a slow dance marathon with a loved one.

- Dance is one of the oldest arts of mankind.
- In Indian culture, dance is closely linked to religion and national culture. Each gesture signifies a certain emotion or symbol.
- Pointe shoes came into existence during the Romantic era. With their help dancers recreated images of magical fairies and goddesses, as if towering above mere mortal characters in performances.
- The first ballet dancer to use pointe shoes was Maria Taglioni.
- Behind the ease and beauty of professional dancers’ movements lies a multitude of injuries. Many retire at the age of 35.
