Why we celebrate Feast of the Holy Family?
Every last Sunday in December following Christmas, Catholics celebrate Holy Family Day. When the celebration of Christmas falls on a Sunday, devout Catholics commemorate and venerate the Holy Family on 30 December.
The Holy Family is commonly thought of as the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus and her husband Joseph.
This holiday is a relatively recent addition to the calendar, although the veneration of the Holy Family was already known in the Middle Ages.
In 1895 Pope Leo XIII allowed celebrations in honour of the Holy Family on the request of some dioceses and orders on the third Sunday after the Feast of the Annunciation. Pope Benedict XV in 1914 made the feast mandatory for the whole Church and moved it to the octave of the Annunciation. Once again, the time of celebration was moved by Pope John XXIII to the first Sunday after the Annunciation. Finally, after the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council, the feast was celebrated on the first Sunday after Christmas.
What Do People Do?
In their sermons on the Holy Family Day the priests, addressing the parishioners, urge them to remember the power and importance of family in every person’s life, the role of father and mother in the upbringing of the child by the example of the life journey of Mary and Joseph the Betrothed.
How to Celebrate Feast of the Holy Family?
Feast of the Holy Family is celebrated annually on the last Sunday in December. This holiday is celebrated by Catholics. Learn about the feast you’ll be celebrating. It helps to know at least some basic information about the feast day, so you can understand why you’re celebrating and share that with your family. Read some articles about the history of the feast day.
Select any prayers or songs you might pray/sing on that day and print out copies of the prayer or lyrics for the family. Make a big deal about it on the feast day or solemnity that you’ve prepared for. Get the family excited for the planned festivities and try and be in good moods as you celebrate throughout the day. You can also go to Mass.
