Why we celebrate Feast Day of Saint John, The Apostle and Evangelist?
Feast Day of St John the Apostle and Evangelist is a religious feast day. People celebrate it in honour of John, a saint who was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus in his lifetime. He witnessed his many feats and wanderings. Today, John is considered to be the patron saint of scholars, as well as creators such as writers, artists and musicians. It is also believed that on this day John blesses love, friendship and makes people who have suffered burns and poison feel better.
The feast is thought to have first appeared in the fourth century. It was then that a small church was built on the site of John’s tomb. Later a huge basilica was built in place of the church. Today, only plates and columns remain of it, but people still come there and pray to the apostle. Christians believe that John can heal illnesses and help cure health problems.
What Do People Do?
It used to be the custom on this day to sow wheat, do gardening, pay back debts and pay taxes. People would bring a loaf to the field and ask for a good harvest, and then give it to the first poor person they met. Today every believer can visit the church, attend a service in memory of John, pray and ask for his help. You can donate money to charity, or give food or clothes to the destitute. The main thing is to do it sincerely and from the heart. There is also a wine blessing ceremony.
How to Celebrate Feast Day of Saint John?
Feast Day of St John the Apostle and Evangelist is celebrated annually. In the Orthodox Church it is commemorated on 21 May. In the Roman Catholic Church, Protestants and other western churches, the apostle and evangelist is commemorated on 27 December. On this day it is not recommended to drink a lot of alcohol, to curse, and to swear. The feast should be spent quietly with family and friends.
