Why we celebrate Fast of Gedaliah?
The Jews observe the Fast of Gedaliah in honour of their ancestors and the late Gedaliah ben Achikam. Gedaliah was the governor of Israel at the time of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylonia. When he was murdered, his people suffered terrible torment. King Ammon brutally murdered some Jews and banished others from their homeland. To commemorate this tragedy, the day of the massacre became a day of mourning and fasting. It falls in the seventh month of the Jewish ecclesiastical calendar.
What Do People Do?
The Gedaliah fast begins at sunrise and ends when stars appear. During this time, Jews are not allowed to eat or drink. Sick, pregnant and lactating women may postpone the fast to another time. On the day of fasting, however, they should eat a plain meal. Believers are not allowed to have fun, listen to music or buy new clothes which require blessing. Jews recite the “Slichot” prayers of repentance.
How to Celebrate Fast of Gedaliah?
The Fast of Gedaliah is observed on the third Tishrei of the Jewish calendar, the day after Rosh Hashanah. If Rosh Hashanah coincides with Thursday and Friday, the fast is postponed until Sunday. This is because public fasting cannot be observed on Sabbath. The exception is Yom Kippur. According to the Gregorian calendar, the Fast of Gedaliah is celebrated on a different day each year.
