Why we celebrate National Pancake Day
National Pancake Day – a carnival festival, which is held on the eve of Ash Wednesday. National Pancake Day marks the beginning of Lent. In francophone countries, this holiday is called Mardi Gras, which literally translates as a fat Tuesday, and in English-speaking – Pancake Day. This tradition in the celebration of the National Pancake Day arose in the city of Olney in Buckinghamshire in 1445. One woman was carried away by baking pancakes, forgetting about the church service. When the bell rang, she ran into the church with a frying pan and pancake so that it would not burn out.
What Do People Do
National Pancake Day is celebrated in the USA in some states, in New Zealand, Ireland and other countries. On this day, the British bake pancakes, eating them in a warm form, sprinkling sugar and sprinkling with lemon juice. By tradition, housewives participate in “pancake races” – running 400 meters with women, holding a hot pan with pancakes. At the same time on the run a pancake throw, at least 2 times. The marathon starts at 11 o’clock in the morning, when the bells ring in the church.

The holiday in some US states is not considered public, as in other countries.
