Why we celebrate Leif Erikson?

Leif Erikson was born in Iceland around 970 AD. His father founded 2 settlements in Greenland. Leif Erikson had a sister and two brothers. Leif Erikson himself went to Norway to work for Olaf I, the King of Norway. During his stay, he converted to Christianity. Returning to the island, he bought a boat and in 1003 went to explore the land west of Greenland, which was discovered by Bjarni Herjolfsson and a senior explorer. The land he discovered is now part of Canada. The Leif Erikson day is chosen on October 9, since on this day his ship Restoration arrived in New York from Stavanger, Norway in 1825. This was the beginning of organized immigration from Scandinavia to the United States.

What Do People Do?

On Leif Erikson, the president of the United States gives a speech, congratulating the Americans on their holiday. On this day, communities and organizations organize exhibitions, publish contributions from people from Northern Europe.

How to Celebrate?

Leif Erikson is not a federal public holiday in the United States. Transport, public and private companies are operating normally.

Why we celebrate Rosh Hashana?

According to the Jewish calendar, the year begins on the first day of Nisan. This month is the seventh month of the Jewish year. Jewish time, the number of the year changes in the first month of Tishri – Rosh Hashana. Since the months are numbered according to the religious calendar, the Jewish New Year begins from the 7th month of the year. Festivals dedicated to the beginning of the new year, held throughout Israel. Residents pray for grain harvest. They blow the trumpet on the 10th day of the month of Tishrei. For the first time such a custom was described in the vision of Ezekiel, the prophet, who lived in the years 600-500. BC. Rosh Hashana is the first day of a 10-day period known as Yamim Noraia. During this period, people of the Jewish faith are required to conduct self-examination and repentance. Yom Kippur is the last of Yamin Noraim.

What Do People Do?

Rosh Hashana is considered a day of rest and prayer. Jews do not work. They read poems, blow in the shofar – a tool made from the horn of an animal. In the second half of the first day Rosh Hashana people can make tashlich. It is a custom to read prayers near running water. According to custom, water purifies from sins. In New York, many Jews perform tashlich from the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. During Rosh Hashana, Jewish communities eat symbolic food at a special dinner for family and friends. They may include: apples; black-eyed beans, pumpkin, honey, leek, pomegranates, spinach.

How to Celebrate?

Rosh Hashana is a public holiday in Israel. This is not a national public holiday in countries such as Australia, Canada, United Kingdom or United States. In some states, for example, in Texas, Florida, and other places where Jews live, Rosh Hashana is a day off.

Why we celebrate Fall/ Spring – September equinox?

The word “equinox” comes from Latin and means “equal night.” The autumnal equinox is a period, when the sun is the right above the equator, and the day and the night are approximately equal in length. In the northern hemisphere during this period, summer ends, autumn begins, and in the southern hemisphere, winter ends and spring begins. The autumnal equinox is one of four days during the year that marks the beginning of a new season.

What Do People Do?

In the Northern Hemisphere, the autumnal equinox occurs every year from September 21 to September 23. Very rarely, it comes on September 21 or 24. These dates are based on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is equivalent to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The autumnal equinox occurs at the same time around the world, but the date and local time vary depending on the year and time zone of the place. During this period, people from different countries are watching the the sky, astrologers attach particular attention to the autumnal equinox.

How to Celebrate?

Fall / Spring – September equinox is not an official state day. Schools, private and public companies work according to their usual schedule.

Why we celebrate Patriot Day?

In 2001, September 11, hijacked 4 aircraft. The hijackers deliberately flew on three planes into two important US buildings: the Pentagon in Washington and the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York. The fourth one crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The loss of life and the damage caused by the hijacking is considered the largest terrorist act in the United States. Nearly 3,000 people died as a result of the attacks. Such attacks have increased the attention of the government to national security. In September, the 11th, Americans unite, showing their patriotism.

What Do People Do?

On the instructions of the President of September 11, the flag of the United States of America is hung on the houses of Americans, in the White House and on all government buildings. The flag should be posted half as a mark of respect for those who died on September 11, 2001. Many people participate in the “minute of silence” campaign at 8:46 am (Eastern Standard Time). It was during those hours that the first plane flew into the mall. Some communities hold special church services or prayer meetings; flowers are laid.

How to Celebrate?

Patriot Day is not a federal holiday and schools and businesses are not closing. Public transport works according to the usual schedule.

Why we celebrate Ashura?

Ashura – 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar. The holiday is connected with the memory of Muharram, who mourned the martyrdom of Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, who died in the battle of Karbala in 61 AH (680 AD). Sunni Muslims believe that Moses fasted that day to show gratitude to God for the liberation of the Israelites from Egypt. According to Sunni traditions, the Prophet Mohammed fasted on this day and urged others to fast. Ashura for Shiite Muslims is not considered a holiday, but rather a sad event. Mourners gather in mosques for sad poetic laments committed in memory of martyrdom, mourning to the melody of drums and chants “I Hussein.

What Do People Do?

In Arab countries, including Lebanon and Iraq, they read books that tell the story of the battle of Karbala and the death of Hussein ibn Ali. In Iran, passionate plays can be performed that recreate the battle of Karbala. In India, the celebration of Muharram is held mainly by the Muslim community of Shiites in Muslim communities and is accompanied by processions and prayer meetings.

How to Celebrate?

In some Muslim countries, Ashura is a public holiday. This day state enterprises do not work.

Why we celebrate National Grandparents Day?

National Grandparents Day has been celebrated in the United States since 1970. Founder of the holiday is considered a housewife in West Virginia, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade. She has been caring for elderly people for several years. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter finally approved the National Grandparents Day. Officially, the holiday began to celebrate in 1979.

What Do People Do?

National Grandparents Day is celebrated in the United States by schoolchildren, students, and adults. Postcards are being prepared, special programs are being organized. About four million greeting cards are sent annually to older people who live in nursing homes. Grandchildren are preparing for their grandparents concerts.

How to Celebrate?

National Grandparents Day is not a public holiday. Companies work on this day on the usual Sunday schedule.

Why we celebrate Muharram?

Aval Muharram or Hijra is a new year for Muslims, which symbolizes two important events in the Islamic year: Aval means beginning in English, and Muharram is the name of the first month in the Muslim calendar. The first day of Muharram is the day of the Islamic New Year, and this day in Hijra began a historic journey from Mecca to Medina. Muharram in 2019 will begin on August 31 and will last for 29 days until September 28. In the Muslim calendar, the holiday begins at sunset of the previous day, so Muslims will celebrate the Muharram at sunset Friday, August 30th. Muharram begins on the Islamic calendar in one day, and the Gregorian will change annually.

What Do People Do?

The Islamic New Year coincides with the journey of the Prophet from Mecca to Medina of the first Muharram in 622 AD. When the Prophet emigrated to Medina, Muslims were indirectly saved from further persecution by Meccan pagans. After the Hijra the Prophet declared in the Medina Constitution that Muslims are a universal fraternity with a unique identity in faith and ideology. Muharram is marked by reading poems from the Quran, prayers and preaching in public halls and mosques. New Year itself is known to Muslims as Maal Hijra.

How to Celebrate?

Muharram is a day off in many Islamic countries. On this day, schools and other enterprises do not work.

Why we celebrate Women’s Equality Day?

In the United States since 1830, Americans are fighting for their rights. Since this period, various movements have arisen against slavery, abstinence and for moral transformation. The main role in the work of movements was played by women. In 1848, a group of abolitionists gathered in Seneca Falls, New York, to discuss the issue of women’s rights. This group consisted of men and women. They fought for their political identity. After the civil war, society lost its power. During the 1890s, the National American Association of Women Electors was established, headed by Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Until the end of the decade, Idaho and Utah gave women the right to vote. In 1910, some other western states began to give women the right to vote. On August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment was introduced into the United States Constitution. She gave women the right to vote. After 51 years, in 1971, Rep. Bella Abzug submitted a bill to the US Congress, according to which Women’s Equality Day is marked on August 26th.

What Do People Do?

In 1971, the Women’s Equality Day is celebrated annually. The purpose of this holiday was to raise awareness of the importance of gender equality in society and the recognition of hard work and sacrifices made by the pioneers of the electoral movement. Women’s human rights organizations and groups working in the field of the right to vote celebrate this day by holding seminars and workshops on issues that women currently face in the country. Women’s Equality Day schools hold special lectures on women’s rights. On this day, organized museum exhibitions.

How to Celebrate?

Women’s Equality Day recalls women who fought for equality in society. Holiday is not a day off. Companies and banks operate in a normal schedule.

Why we celebrate Krishna Janmashtami?

Krishna Janmashtami – Hindu festival, which is celebrated in many regions of India. In some regions of the country, it is known as Sreekrishna Jayanthi. According to the Hindu calendar, Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on Ashtam (the eighth day) Krishna Paksha (dark two weeks) in the month of Shravana or Bhadra (in the Hindu calendar there is a leap month every three years). Many legends tell about the life of Krishna. As a child he often joked, portraying a flute dancer. One story says that he defeated the multi-headed serpent Kalia, dancing him into submission. Since 1902 In Krishna Janmashtami, a religious procession has been going through the streets of Old Dhaka. The procession was suspended in 1948 after the partition of India and Pakistan. Ceremony resumed in 1989.

What Do People Do?

Krishna Janmashtami – is considered one of the important holidays of Hindus. On this day Lord Krishna was born. Throughout India, ceremonies and prayers are held in temples. In front of Krishna Janmashtami, the Hindus pray and fast until midnight. Since Krishna was born in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, therefore, the main event is held here. In Tamil Nadu, oil pillars are set up with pots of money tied to the top. Boys dressed as Krishna try to climb these pillars in order to receive money, while the audience injects water into them. In Maharashtra, where this festival is known as Govinda, pots with buttermilk are hung high above the streets. Boys-teams build pyramids to smash pots. In Fiji, this holiday is called “Krishna Ashtami”, and the celebration lasts eight days and ends with the culmination of the birthday of Lord Krishna. During these eight days, Indians in Fiji gather in temples, sing songs, dance, recite prayers and distribute prasadam.
